1999 SE Ran out of gas...
I recently ran out of gas and coasted into the gas station with the check engine light on. I put gas in the car but it wouldn't start. After about 4 hours, I came back and it started right up. It seemed to be running fine but the check engine light was still on. After turning the car off, I was unable to start it again immediately. I could start it intermittently but usually only after it sat for a while and it would die shortly afterward. I figured that I had simply burned up the fuel pump. However, after replacing the fuel pump, strainer, and fuel filter, it continues to do the same thing. It either stalls after a few minutes or runs extremely rough. If it does stall, I can't get it started again afterward. If it starts, often I have to hit the accelerator to maintain idle. If I don't, it stalls almost immediately. What are the likely culprits here? I am about to replace the plugs. Could this be an odd coincidence where a sensor (crank or oxygen?), the fuel pressure regulator, or coil(*) went out simultaneously? I don't really have a way to check the check engine code(*)... Or is there a cheap or easy way to do so with my car immobile?

You own a 99 so you will able to bring it to advance or auto zone to get your light checked then at that point you will know the exact problem. My guess would be a crank sensor. But you should get that light checked first

Hopefully, I can get it there. It does sound like a crank sensor from what I've been reading here. Could someone give me a link to a page for crank sensor replacement instructions, please?

Well, I just replaced the plugs and it ran in idle for a while, I revved it a few times and it came back to idle again. Meanwhile, the check engine light went off. So.... I decided to try to take it for a ride. As soon as I got 100 feet out of the driveway and really tried to accelerate for the first time, it died on me. The problem remains. But no check engine light now?!?
