Default Grinding/whirring

Hey...I am having a strange grinding/whirring sound during decelleration with the brakes applied. Brake performance is fine, pedal feels good, rotors look fine, the master cylinder is full, and the brake light isn't on. Sounds like it is coming from the front of the car. The speed/intensity of the sound is consistant with decelleration. It is loudest/fastest as I begin the stop, and nearly gone right before I come to a complete stop.

Any ideas where to start?

Just for further diagnosis here..this sound won't occur if you let the car naturally decelerate without brakes, correct?

Only when the brakes are applied.

Personally at that point then I'd take the front wheels off and inspect both the pads and the rotors.

Pull all 4 wheels. While it sounds like the front..it could be any of the brakes.

Just for an update, I was driving a death trap.

New pads up front (driver side was metal on metal). Both rotors replaced (one was scored badly), calipers honed, and BOTH springs in the rear drums were broken. And I had them fix my rattling heatshield between the gastank and the muffler. Replaced everything with premium parts.

$600 CDN w/labour.

What really pisses me off is I had NO warning. It went from working fine, to making an awful grinding sound during a 15 minute drive. I thought there was supposed to be a warning indicator on brake pads...but anyway...

Guess I won't be buying a performance part this paycheque.

Disc brake pads should always have warning tabs. Drums don't...because there'* no real way to make them.

Glad you got it fixed up and didn't have any problems because of it.
