grindin'
So I've been driving my car quite awhile with a grinding noise....
It'* just a plain grinding noise - if I put it in park or neutral it'* not as loud as when I have it in drive or reverse. When I had a friend look at it, at first he thought it was my water pump, but I brought it to a mechanic and he said the waterpump was just fine. So...I had the oil changed in my supercharger, thinking that my oil may not have been changed since I got the car (I've had the car for about a year now). The mechanic I got to doesn't really know anything about superchargers, so I dont know what else to try...could it be the coupler or bearings in my supercharger? how do I know for sure?
And please tell me the price to fix it is low... :?

If its your SC coupler it will only do it at idle i belive. your sure its not anything else..AC compressor..Alternatory..tensioner pulley...I would try to eliminate everything first...get a mechanics stethascope and listen to the nose cone on your SC...then listen to the top of your alternator..AC compressor..process of elimination!
have fun lol

My first guess would be the AC compressor, look for metal filings around the clutch mechanism at the front of the unit.
SC couplers don't make a grinding noise, the snout bearings do, the coupler rattles at idle when it'* shot.
Check the AC compressor and let us know.
Cheers,

-"dittos" -what Wilren just said-
And in the case where one belt runs about everything, I have excellent luck finding it with the engine off. -here'* how: Release the tension on your serpentine belt, slide the belt slightly away from each pulley of each separate device, and then manually rotate, (spin it if possible) each pulley. Chances are real good you'll find it that way.
(be sure to check the tensioner and any idler pulleys too.)
Let us know what you find !!
Thanks, Harry

Pay VERY close attention to the supercharger nosecone. If the bearings are going -- DO NOT wait to service it! Meltdown is not fun... found out the hard way. Have pics to prove it. And a big credit card bill.

Probably an Alternator bearing. My 2 cents....Because she'* a girl, don't mean she don't know what we're talkin about...I know girls that could tear down a 350 small block better than I can.
