Security light comes on.. means the VATS system doesn't like your key. Make sure it is clean, and try to get in the Ignition cylinder as well [where the key goes]. That will clear it right up.

No, he didn't. He had the KEY checked. Not the contacts in the ignition switch. That'* what opensource is suggesting.

Try moving around the key in the lock cylinder BEFORE taking it out of the LOCK posistion. Maybe it will register.. if the key is badly worn, this may be the case.

i had almost the exact thing happen to me over the summer, i drove to my girlfriends house to pick her up car started fine and when we got back into my car to leave the car wouldnt even crank. i was under the hood tryin everything and checkin connections, cleaned my ignition key, cleaned the other one and used it, nothin. got the car towed to a place where dad and i could work on it and decided to take the starter out to have it tested, not a fun job takin it out trust me, but anyhow the starter was tested and didnt do a thing, so it was bad, got a new starter, put it in and havent had any problems since. to top it off this was all the day of prom and i got it finished in time to get the car home and get ready to go, it was close
