Just off the top of my head, I'd say it'* most likely one of the large backlighting bulbs in the gauge cluster. 'fraid it'* going to need surgery to reach that bulb.

I wrote a TechInfo article on how to remove the gauge cluster. It'* not that hard to do it if you're patient and good with small tools, and the results are worth it. Um... here it is...

Another question. Is the word "compass" supposed to light up? If so, I may yank the dash to repair this and the DIC light and yank the ABS bulb because I don't plan on fixing those anytime soon and that light is bugging me.

OK, with respect to the DIC, are you talking about the outline of the car and odometer (green) or something else? The green is not a light bulb. Those are VF displays that likely have oxidized connections. I just worked on mine using acgssei'* procedure.

See the end of this link.

The gear letters on mine are controlled with the dimmer switch, but the dot next to the gear the car is in, is always on.

I was talking about the actual words lit in red "Driver Information" above the green car outline screen. What about the word "Compass" below the compass screen?

If I recall right, both are backlit off the main bulbs; they don't have little bulbs of their own. There are about four wedge-base #194 or #168 bulbs in the back of the cluster that light up pretty much everything you see that'* red-colored.

Once you have the dash gauge cluster out and have the back circuit boards unplugged and/or lifted off to one side, it'* easy to spot the four backlighting sockets because they're so much bigger than the other stuff, like the little tell-tale bulbs for the ABS warning, Traction Off, etc.

If they are all lit off 4 bulbs, then why would just two display lights go out on opposite ends of the dash. I am under belief these have their own bulbs. But you are saying "Compass" is supposed to light up?

OK, I looked for you. You're welcome.

"COMPASS" does not light up. "DRIVER INFORMATION" does light up.

There are lots of bulbs in there, and not all of the red is driven off the larger bulbs. Some are small and some are large. There are plenty of plastic optical things that take light from one place to another. Not all of the bulbs can be accessed without taking it apart.

I agree with Fudd; there are all kinds of ingenious little plastic light runners so that things like the legends on the pushbuttons will light up, as well as the needles of the gauges.

But in any event, whether it'* one bulb out or three, you have to do the same amount of surgery to reach them, and when you've opened it up, you'll have access to all of them at once.
