No, the engine would stall, no signal to send spark. If it idles and misfires when driving I would suspect bad ignition. Check the plugs, if they are anything other then light gray, replace them. If the wires have never been changed, I would change them. Also the coils may be old and weak. Another thing to check is the fuel pressure.

Your check engine light is on, what codes come up?

This could also be MAF or fuel pressure related (been there) but a tuneup is an excellent place to start.

Definitely not a crankshaft position sensor. If your CEL is flashing, your engine is misfiring. Get the car scanned for trouble codes to find if it is a multi or single cylinder misfire. That will help to narrow down the suspects.

A plugged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump can cause hesitation when accelerating. If you haven't already, change the fuel filter and after that have the fuel pressure checked.

The reason we are steering you away from the crank shaft position sensor is when it fails the engine stalls. A bad CPS will not cause the symptoms you describe.

What specific code(*) is(are) popping up? Not impossible to have 2 seperate unrelated issues at the same time.
