Problem started yesterday First it hesitated to engage the starter then it would not engage or only 1 in 20 trys Now it will not engage
Drove for 30 minutes stopped and then turn key and I hear the fuel pump spin up
Here the ignition relay click. Hear the console shift interlock click but
The starter does not engage
I have already
Checked the battery voltage which is 12.5 volts so no dead cell
Tested the ignition relay to make sure the click was really opening and closing the contacts
Replaced the battery cable ends for the cables that run to the starter and the alternator
Going out to try to see if I am getting 12 volts at the small terminal at the starter.
Am I missing anything else???
Going out today hoping that the snow holds off!

You would want to check the amps being drawn. A battery can test at the correct voltage and not have the ability to supply the amps needed.

Another thought is the starter is acting up. One way to try and check that is to have a friend hold the key to on and you tap on the metal body of the starter with a hammer. Being careful not to hit the wires or soleniod on top of it. If the starter comes to life with a tap..then the problem is usually a sticky soleniod/brushes.

Do any of the parts stores up there test battery/alt for free?

I sent a buddy to the parts store in the cold rain for the test up this weekend. (Mostly because it was cold and rainy )

So had the battery checked it was so so from the load test
Bought a new battery figured better now than in January
Tried no turn over
Swapped out the starter
Still no turn over
What'* left???

Ignition relay, what'* that ?

Are you getting 12 volts to the small (purple?) wire when the key is turned to the start position? If not then what'* the security light doing.

Don't have 12 volts on small wire
So two things left I think that could be the cause
Both occured to me after I swapped the starter
Neutral switch on transmission or the security system
I hooked up my Code Scanner and checked and there are no codes logged on the ECM
The security light is blinking which I think is normal.
I have tried both sets of keys Mine and the wife'* with same result. I thought the security system would let the motor at least turn over initially.
Hoping for the neutral switch
Am I on the right track?

The security system (VATS) does disable the starter. The security light should come on for just a few seconds when the key is turned to the run position. Do you want to try the VATS bypass?

IIRC The Security light is not staying on solid It just flashes on and then goes off
So more likely the Neutral Switch??

If the security light is turning off then the park/neutral safety switch & starter enable relay are both possibilities. I guess we can also add the ignition switch to the list.
Give me a few minutes & I'll add a wiring diagram. Did you check all the fuses?


Here'* a wiring diagram that covers 92 & 93'*. 94'* will be basically the same but the fuse locations may be different.
