Tranny problem-not engaging
About Oct., 2006, my Bonnie, when starting up cold, would not move when I shifted from P into R or D. It just sat there. After about 5 to 15 seconds it engaged and all was fine. This ONLY happened when it was cold outside and NOT every time. I chatted with a tranny shop in Boise and the owner said it was a seal (not sure which one). He said the pressure had to build up so it would shift. Was he telling me the truth? Cost of overall abt. $1300.
When the weather warmed up in the Spring it quit doing it. And, even though it'* cold now, it'* acting fine. Magic? Problem cured?

Yes he'* telling you the truth.... There will come a time when it will no longer move the car..

Thanks. Is this problem common for a 96 bonny? Doesn't seem right that I'd need a tranny overhaul at 122K miles.

Not what I would call a common Problem.. But with age and miles the seals can become hard and brittle.... They can break into pieces.... When this happens the circuits will not pressurize as they should... You'd be amazed to see all of the seals inside the trans( O-Rings is what I'm mainly talking about )...
Also let me pose a question... Does the Transmission seem to be making any Growl or groaning noises while in park?

Thanks for the quick response. No noises while in Park, or any other time. It'* been working fine since last Spring. ?????????? If a seal/O-ring was causing the original problem you wouldn't think it would suddenly get better (normal).

Yes you would not think it would get better... And no it shouldn't, It should only get worse..
Its also possible you could have had some debris or built up varnish in a fluid circuit..
Ok the no Growling is a good thing... That means to me that the Pump is not starving for fluid... So the filter isn't clogged up... But it may be worth a change..
Hard to say what the issue is for you in this case.. But keep an eye on it and see if it ever happens again..

Could low fluid levels cause that type of problem? I do get a little leakage around the pan & tightening the bolts fixes the problem.
I do plan on having it serviced in the next 4 or 5 weeks. It'* been at least 40K miles since the last one.

My 96 SSE does the same thing I previously posted about it.
I don't see it as a problem but rather a condition...so it takes 15 seconds sometimes for the tranny fluid to come up to pressure. So what? I'm going to spend $2,000 to have the transmission rebuilt? I think not. My car has not changed in 6 months of driving at this point I have my money out of the car and can throw it away.
