1870,
Circuit Description,
The PCM monitors the TCC slip by calculating the diffrence between engine speed and transmission output shaft speed.. If the PCM detects an excessive amount of slip when the TCC is engaged then the DTC 1870 sets...
Conditions for setting the DTC
No TP DTC'* P0122 or P0123
No Vss DTC'* P0502 or P0503
No 1-2 solenoid performance DTC P0751
No 1-2 solenoid electrical DTC P0753
No 2-3 solenoid performance DTC P0756
No 2-3 solenoid electrical DTC P0758
No TCC PWM solenoid electrical DTC P1860
No TCC solenoid electrical DTC P0740
The engine speed is 800-5000 rpms
Not in fuel shut off
Throttle angle is 8-35%
The trans is not in first gear
The trans gear range is D4
The trans fluid temperature is 68-266F
The engine torque is 50-170 ft lbs
The speed ratio is 0.70-1.05
The vehicle speed is 35-75mph
The TCC is commanded on and at maximum apply for 5 seconds
The TCC slip is 200-1500 Rpms for 8 seconds
The above conditions must occour 3 times with the TCC commanded off between each occourance
Action taked when the DTC sets,
The PCM inhibits TCC operation
The PCM inhibits 4th gear, if the transmission is in hot mode
The PCM illuminates the MIL( SES ) after 2 consecutive ignition cycles with a reported failure...
Hope that help...

Thats exactly what the trans shop told us today. I guess the TC is wearing out after 183k miles, how unreliable . We were advised to get the whole transmission rebuilt since he will already be in there, and since we plan on keeping the car it is probably a good idea.

Mike, I just dropped you a line in the surging post.... I think I probably have the same fate awaiting me in the not-too-distant future. I hope you've got good tranny guys rebuilding it, and maybe you can throw a few aftermarket parts in there to make it stronger than stock. This definitely gives me more reason to believe that my TC surging could be the beginning of the end. Thanks for being the sacrificial lamb!
