Quickest way I do it is with a power washer with mild pressure. It takes most of the crud off.

What I do is:
1. wrap the coils with a plastic bag (7-11 variety)
wrap the alternator, same.
wrap the cruise control module.
2. spray down the entire engine with citrus orange blaster or simillar (simple green, etc)
3. use a long handled brush or parts cleaner and work the cleaner into the crevices.
4. let it soak a few minutes.
5. rinse it off with a garden hose.
6. repeat untill its clean as you like it.

be sure and leave the hood for a few hours after to dry off, remove plastic bags.

I was always a little hesitant to spray out my engine bay. Eventually I did it at a do-it-yourself car wash. It was a lot less painful than I thought. I had two bags, one covering the alternator the other the air filter. I sprayed the dirty areas with a liberal amount of Simple Green and then used the car washes engine bay cleaner. It took all that built up gunk right off.

I always use my power washer and just go at it with medium pressure (around 1,000 PSI) standing a few feet away and use a constant sweeping motion. I don't use any pre-application, either.

I'm not sure if it'* recommended or not, but I always leave the engine running while doing it (I stay away from the block though...don't want to crack it!!).
