Drive Axle...what sound would it make?
Hey all...what type of noise would a front axle make if it was going bad? I'm having an aweful noise intermittantly on my 98 Old Aurora. It'* a sort of loud hollow banging noise that seems to coincide with rotation of the wheel. Not restricted to while turning.(bowbow...bowbow..bowbow...like your tapping a 1/2 full paint can.) It may last for 10 seconds then go away.....or it may last for for up to 5 minutes or so. The first time it happened, I thought my car snagged something from the road and it was banging as I drove down the road.
I posted this on autoforums under the aurora section...but you guys always seemed to have good stuff for me!
Thanks - Drew

Re: Drive Axle...what sound would it make?
When my right wheel bearing was going, I got a humming sound whenever I was turning to the left.
When my CV Joints were shot in my old Audi 100, it sounded like marbles rolling around in a can but the sound never went away ( I got rid of the noise by selling the Audi). Usually the sign of bad CV joint is noise when turning in one direction.
Have you checked your CV Boots for any damage?
It'* easier to replace a half-shaft then repairing a CV joint.
