Default 93 Bonneville a/c compressor "ticky"

A week ago, my a/c worked fine, cold when driving on the freeway. Now, the ac isn't so cold, and the compressor makes a "tick, tick, tick" as it runs. The clutch appears to be engaging properly, so I wonder if the compressor is just shot or any other symptoms, like low freon, or pressure switch on compressor kicking in and out.

The a/c has been retrofitted in 97; i bought the car in 2000 and haven't done anything to it since.

Any ideas or thoughts I'd definately appreciate. I'm sure you all know - compressors aren't cheap, but I'm sick of driving alone 'cause no one wants to ride in a sweaty hot Bonne!!

the oil is probably bad in the system so the compressor is wearing out... better off replacing it with a used one or a rebuilt one
