How do you prime the oil pump?
How do you prime the oil pump on a 3800 supercharged GM engine with a crank driven oil pump? Reason: someone is selling a 94 white SSEI says the oil pump needs priming, selling the car for 1500 with new transmission, is it worth it?

As far as priming the crank driven pump, I'll have to check the FSM, which are at my parents yet. I'll grab them in the morning and let you know what it says, if no one else gets back to you before then.

The pump is built into the timing cover.
Why does the pump need to be primed? Is this a new motor?

If the motor is together the questkon I'd wonder is why does it need to be primed and why is this a problem for the mechanic?
Every mechanic knows how to prime an oil pump.

I have in the past pulled the timming cover from a 3800 and never had to reprimbe an oil pump... Put it all back together and hit the key and poof, 60psi right off the bat...
Now I am wondering the same tho, its a gyrator style oil pump, if you were to rebuild the oil pump it would need to be primbed with vasoline when reassembled...
Somehow I'm not trusting of this car or situation...

Things don't add up.
It'* a 94 at a shop w/a new transmission. Ok
It'* in need of the oil pump being primed......uh...why?
It makes no sense as to why unless there is major engine work that was done and if so, then the person that did it.....should have packed it with vasoline to ensure it was ready to go.

I agree. I do not know about the vaseline, but the same idea applies when you do an oil change; all of the oil drains out of the system and tehre is very little; if any left in the pump. Same idea right?
No common sense to put a new trans w/ a questiuonable motor. do you have/can he provide paperwork for the new trans?
