Default Tricky T-Stat Bolt (3 pics inside)

Ok, I am trying to change out my thermostat but I cant get the housing off. One bolt comes out nice and easy...the other is pretty much rounded off and very inaccesible. Pics attached below. What exactly is that thing blocking my access to this bolt? And how do I get it out of the way?

That'* the EGR pipe. It'll unbolt from the bracket at the bottom end. And I don't know if it'* bolted in or twist locked onto the upper intake manifold next to the throttle body. Once you get it out of the way, that bolt is very easy to get to.

So it is safe to remove the bolts on the bottom end of the EGR pipe...No fluid to leak out right?

Also, I've noticed through searching that a 160* t-stat will cause codes to be thrown or something. Is it just a code (that I can erase or deal with), or does it cause problems withing the PCM that need to be addressed otherwise?

I believe that you can get that bolt with a flex head socket as another alternative to pulling the EGR pipe.

I have the clearance to get a socket to the bolt, but my socket is too wide (thick) and cant get onto the bolt.

You can remove the EGR pipe without worry, just don't find some way to crack it.

160 thermo may or may not throw a code, BUT, it will reduce your gas mileage because the PCM will never see operating temp or see it late and use more fuel trying to heat up. A proper chip, like my Hypertech, is tuned for a 160, so I have no problems with it.

The EGR is used to recrcuilate exhaust gases. hence EGR. All dry, not fluids.

Since it hasn't already been said, We usually recommend a 180* 'stat, not a 160*, for reasons mentioned above. Just get a 180 and be done with it.

And get yourself some PB Blaster or similar penetrating lubricant to spray those bolts with. A liberal dose of PB Blaster, let set for 1/2 hour then some more just before attempting the removal. Works wonders on most rusty bolts.

Lash..got me thinking. That bolt isn't rusted. It'* anything it'll be fused from dis similar metals. I will usually put the socket and extension on and give it a firm whack. Not trying to break anything but the fusing. Firm..is not a baseball term
