A/C Recharge question.
As dumb as the dealer was when we had her fixed, the A/C system on the 93 was completely replaced for a couple grand years ago. IT was last serviced in 2000, and this was after the introduction of R-134a. Despite this, they replaced it with the stock system and filled her up with ******* R12. Now its summer 2006, and my A/C isnt blowing cool air anymore, and I need to recharge it. I didn't find out till this morning after purchasing a 134 kit that the morons at the dealer filled her up with r12. .....years after the alternative was introduced. ......and not thinking that when it came time for me to recharge it I would not be able to buy R12 anymore. And in this day and age I cant find a can of r12 anywhere except ebay. Thank you stupid EPA. .!.. ..!.
My question to you folks is, should I get a R12 kit from Ebay and be done with it? Or pay around $140 to have it proffesionally done and converted over to 134a? The big problem with our 93 was that it was such a money well for us in the A/C department, it failed two times and we had to spend a ton of money fixing it up. I dont want to risk screwing her up again. I looked on ebay but they ether sell in bulk or this one:

I dont want to buy bulk, and I dont know what that Toyota bottle is supposed to be there for. And if someone could point to a source, say Canada where I can get a decent R12 kit id be grateful.
ANyway I need some advice. Its getting awefully hot out here. :(

I'd pay the $140. That doesn't strike me as a bad price, and the R12 problem is solved.
I was in Mexico in March and saw the 12 oz. cans of R12 at an auto parts store for about $1 US, just like it used to be here.
Bummer, huh?

I agree with Bob on this one. While there may be some here that will tell you how inexpensively it can be converted if you do it yourself, there are some potential issues you can creat if everything isn't done just right. Plus, you need a proper vaccum pump and recharge/recycle station to do it correctly.
The $140 would be money well spent IMO, especially if the place that does it is reputable and backs up their work.

I'm with these guys. If you are going to convert to R-134, have it done somewhere. That way if anything happens or it doesn't perform right, they can fix it, not you.
There are R-12 alternatives out there, most are drop in replacements, and I have heard lots of good things about them. But again, if you are not versed in A/C charging, it would be advisable to have someone help you.
