Depends on your scanner, but many have a parameter (OBDII systems) that will allow you to scan for misfires and reports the cylinder that the misfire is occurring on. If it is just an occassional miss, it will not set a code and turn on your Check Engine light. It has to be a somewhat consistent problem before it will set a code.

I'm not sure what you mean by "shudder" though. Most shudders originate in the transmission. Misses and hesitation are usually more indicative of an engine problem.

well i had posted a problem that i orginally thought to b a tranny problem but wilwren said that they were common signs of an engine misfire, and to check the coils...so im gonna go that route before i start to worry about a tranny problem

Check the codes, I had a similar problem last week. I got mine scnaned at autozone, found it was a misfire. All it needed was one plug wire changed. (I did all of them + new plugs anyways, but fix the problem first.)

There is also a procedure in techinfo on checking your coils.

If you scanner can do live stuff, run with it live. To throw a misfire code the misfire must occur a certain number of times in a certain number of revolutions or something like that.

Look for a P030x code x=0-6

Your PCM will only log misfires as a fault after a certain number in a certain amount of time on each cylinder, or a certain number of randoms in a certain amount of time.

Let'* cover the basics.

Plugs, how long ago and what brand?
Wires, how long ago and what brand?
Air filter, how long ago?
Fuel filter, how long ago?
Have you ever cleaned your throttle body and sensors?
Have you checked fuel pressure?
Did this shudder being all of a sudden after you worked on the car?

If I remember correctly you posted that the issue was happening with the torque converter in lockup and this would indicate a ignition related issue.

The coils are still a possibility if it only misses when warmed up. Other than that, sounds like you're on the right track.
