Brake-Shift Interlock
Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone has had any trouble with the brake shift interlock on their Bonneville. Lately, I have been noticing that my car will not always let me move the shifter out of park unless I am to take my foot on and off of the brake a few times. This does not happen every time I get in the car but probably about 35% of the time. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this problem and how much it would cost to fix if it were to break totally? I appreciate any information that can be given to me. Thanks
Jim

I guess maybe I should just wait until it quits totally then... Is it easy to fix if it is just the switch as opposed to the relay or solenoid (whichever of the two it is)? And also... if it does break and I'm ever in a bind, is it possible to disable that shift interlock?

Believe it or not myself and 2 other guys designed the brake shift interlock solinoid. It is designed so if it fails you will just not have this function (i.e. as if it isn't there). But since it senses the brake light signal check your bulbs and your switch by the pedal. If all of your tail lights are out it will not work. You also can simply disconnect the BSI. It should be located near the shifter. It is inline with the cable that runs to your steering columb. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. I checked my brake lights and all of them are lighting. I will probably wait until it quits totally before I try disabling the BSI. Where is the switch located on the brake and what is the easiest way to check it? Also, is it easy to replace? Thanks for your time.
