Well, the title pretty much sums up my whole issue. Was headed to a friends house for the evening when the car in front of me hit it'* brakes hard, and when I hit mine, the car stalled almost immediatly. Once i got it off the road, I tried to start it again, and it took right off. Went a mile or two down the road, and went to turn down a street, and same exact thing. Once again it started right up again. Since i was headed downhill both times this happened, I thought it was low gas, but when I filled it up, I still had about 4 gallons left in the tank. Could this be a dirty fuel filter, or perhaps a fuel pick-up issue? All input is appreciated. Thanks.

Holy crap, this exact same thing happened to me today, it happened 3 times all during rather hard braking going up hill, down hill and on level ground. I had about a quarter of a tank left when it was happening, so I filled it up and it hasn't happened since. But I don't understand because it has never happened before. I was thinking the same thing, maybe has to do with fuel filter or fuel pump.

could it be the sender/pickup/punp in the gas tank. There were problems with the early 92-93 with less than a 1/4 tank, that has stalling isues

Hrm.... I hope it'* just the bad GM design, but when the car stalled, there wasn't much of a sputter. It simply died, almost like an electrical issue, except all the guages and electronics were still working completely fine. The tach went straight down, with no bucking or anything of that sort. It was different from the exit-ramp issues that have been discussed. Does this ring any bells or sound like a familar problem?

put your car in neutral before slamming on the brakes and see if the problem still happens.

I had this issue happen about a year and a half ago. The issue was with the tank and the electric pump in the tank. The pump went bad and had to be replaced. However, the original GM tanks have a plastic baffle that go around the fuel pump. This helps to keep the fuel around the pump in such the conditions as you mentioned. It just so happens that the plastics that GM used (at least in my 92) were subpar and are very prone to getting brittle and as luck would have it the baffle around the pump had cracked and deteriorated and was allowing fuel to escape from the pump.

Just a word to the wise, if you buy a replacement tank from O'Reilly Auto the tank has an all-metal baffle. Wish GM had done that in the first place.
