Latelly I have been having problems with my 1997 Bonneville SE AGAIN I recently replaced the crankshaft position sensor on it because I thought that it was the cause of my car not wanting to start. Well for a while it would take longer and longer to start. Now it takes a REAL long time to start when you FIRST start it. After the first start it will start up fine. But then it starts to run worst and worst as you drive it. It will run great when its cold but if I take it on the highway, and drive it, then get into town it will die. The other day I drove the car longer then I normally do, and when I got into town from the highway it started idling rough at the red light, then died and I had to wait almost 30 minutes to start it again, it would just crank and crank but wouldn't start. I know my EGR valve is shot, but could the fuel pressure regulator be going out, cause its begining to smell bad on gas, and when you take the gas cap off the car when its running it dies out. Also if you slam on the brakes hard it tryes to die out. I noticed a distinctive ticking as if it was bad plugs but I checked the compression and plugs and they are fine. The car has a little over 261,000 highway miles, and has had extensive upper intake, and lower intake repairs and regulare tune-ups and oil changes on time but STILL has problems. I've also noticed that when you drive it over 200 miles on a tank of gas it gets worst, then when you fill it back up it runs a little better but still does the same crap. I'm trying to hold out till next January to buy a new car cause this one is becoming a money pit and I don't want to get killed in it on the road if I have to make a sudden stop and it dies on me.

What are your fuel pressures? And, how old is your fuel pressure regulator?

Get a pressure guage on that car.

I haven't been able to check the fuel pressure latelly, but I'm sure that the fuel pressure regulator is the original one on this car.
