Default High Idle RPM'*?

I went out and started my car this afternoon, and it was about 23* F outside. I went inside for probably between five and ten minutes, and came back out to the car to see that the RPM'* were at about 1500 when they are usually at 800-1000 when it'* cold. I just gave a light tap on the gas and then it fell back to normal 800-1000 RPM'*. I'm pretty sure my alternator is starting to go... would there be any reason that the RPM'* would spike and stay like that for a while?
