Default My Bonnie is back! a.k.a. intermittent stall/die!!!!!

Well my bonnie is back from the dead. At least for now. Drove it in to work this morning for first time; 45 minute ride. No problems. Ran it in the garage, up and down driveway, and around neighborhood for about a week to make sure all was ok.

In case anyone else is having this trouble here is what I did:

95 Bonneville SSEi; with supercharger.

Car would just kill/die while driving then wouldn't start for hours or even days. It died going 70 m.p.h., or sitting at a stop light, or wouldn't even start. This went on for about a year and included two towings back home.

I read the posting here and else where on the net and did the following:

Changed the Crank Sensor, twice.
Put RTV in and around Crank Sensor connector to keep out oil.
Checked tailight wiring for shorts. none.
Removed trailer light connections.
Checked fuses and relays. no bad ones.
Replaced ALL rear bulbs. Found one slightly corroded and fixed.
Removed and tested Ignition Control Module; tested OK
Changed Battery Cable terminals to ones with Hex bolt for better tightening.
Re-did battery engine block grounds.
Checked Positive Battery connection and Relay block. good.
Replaced dead battery, it was completely drained.
Replaced alternator, 0 output. It was the original AC Delco unit that came with the car.
Checked Spark Plugs.
Hooked up scantool from Autozone, no codes stored or reported.


In the end I think it was a combination of things. I think the main culprit was the Alternator going bad. I my case it just took a long time to go bad and was intermittent. Since it was the original I think it just got used up. I also think the Alternator may have contributed to the Crank Sensor going bad. No proof just gut feeling. I also think my battery terminals and the battery ground connection to the block may have contributed to the Alternator going bad. They were always loose and the I was never comfortable with the ground connections when I replaced the water pump a few years ago. Finally, the slightly corroded tail light may have been a contributing factor.

After reading all of the posts and finally breaking down and getting a subscription to AllData, damn I am a cheap bastard, I would have to say, in hindsight, I shold have followed the troublshooting suggestions listed here in this forum and in the AllData website.

Well my 2 cents is :

1. First and Foremost hookup a Scantool and get the error codes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Check to see if you have spark If not troubleshoot that.
3. Check fueld delivery. If not troubleshoot that.
4. Check The Damn Alternator. It is easy to remove and easy to test.
5. Check the battery terminals and ground connections and replace if necessary.
6. Check the Tail or front lights.

Thanks for everyone'* help.

Now on to fixing my Steering Wheel controls, cleaning out the AC condensor thingy, and replacing the thermostat.
