Hey, if you do end up replacing the tranny and you get a it from a salvage yard, can I have your old trans??? If you don't have a core charge on it of course? I will be willing to drive to IA boarder to pic it up...maybe farther depending on where ames is?

Well guys, thanks for the advice.
Last cheap hope: If OLBlueEyesBonne is out there....Did the bad mount problem give a shudder under load ??
I'll take it down to the tranny shop tomorrow and see what they say.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again

Lakeville,
Ames is about 100 minutes down I35 from the Minnesota line. If I have to replace the trans and there is no core charge involved, I'll let you know.

Apparrently it happened when he hit a bump at speed.
You might talk to the prior owners and ask how/when it first started happening.

Well, the transmission guy drove it with me and said the shudder was caused by a bad sprag in the bottom end of the tranny. He also got the tranny to slip pretty badly when he drove it. He said neither of those would be caused by a mount. He wants $1200-1400 to remove, rebuild and replace. $200 less if I do the r&r.
A junkyard trans for $450 is looking pretty good right now. I'll make sure I get it from a yard that will guarantee it for 90 days. I'll clean the pan, put in a new filter and fluid and figure that if there are no symptoms in 90 days, it ought to run for a while. My son'* '92 has been going for 280,000 miles, so.....
Thanks again guys, for all the help.
I'll post some pics after I get it cleaned up.
