Default Exhaust Woes

Driving on the interstate today and my exhaust seemed to break off the downpipe. I looked underneath the car, and sure enough it broke where the downpipe connects to the lead pipe to the cat. Is this very common? If i just welded the seam again would it hold or do I need a new pipe?

- the bonne does sound extremely different now, and i actually got a headache on the rest of the drive home....

Thanks,
Art
