1996 SSE front spindle swap.
hey guys, I just got a passenger side spindle from my local scrap yard and I am looking to swap it with my current one due to a bad wheel bearing. I looked through the techinfo and a few posts and they are saying that the socket you need to take off the nut on the end of the CV shaft is 34mm. I was about to go and buy one but I looked at the CV shafts i ripped out of my old 1990 SSE and they appear to be 1 3/8" nuts. I dont want to be stuck paying for a socket i cant use so if anyone can verify the size of the nut on the 1996 i would appreciate it. also, i am looking for a proper procedure for removing the spindle and installing the new one but most people are just installing a new hub assembly. I have the Chilton manual and all i can find on this subject is the procedure for removing the cv shafts. i am assuming that this is the same procedure except for i will be leaving the cv shaft in the tranny. am i correct? any feedback woudl be appreciated.

Is there a reason that you want to replace the entire steering knuckle? That seems to be an awful lot of extra, unnecessary work if the problem is a just a bad hub. Besides the axle, you'll have to remove the strut bolts, separate the tie-rod end, and ball joint, put it all back together, and then get an alignment.
There are some parts that I wouldn't recommend replacing with used, and a hub is one of them.

Should be 36mm. About .042 bigger than 1.375. They sell a special socket just for that purpose. Hopefully this link will work.

hmmm. maybe its a good thing that i posted here first. I dont have alot of money so i got the spindle for cheap, but if it'* that much easier to just pull the hub and swap it with a new one maybe thats the route i should go. I just have to find a cheaper aftermarket hub. ty for the input fellas!!

When mine failed I ended up buying a slightly used (17,000 mi IIRC) hub from Ed Morad. But Im not sure that he sells many Bonneville parts.
But ive put at least 2000-3000 miles on it so far and havent had a bit of trouble.
Getting the hub out of the spindle you have shouldnt be too hard, it just might take a little effort. But swapping the entire spindle isnt necessary IMO, plus you will need to pay to have it aligned afterwards if you swap the whole spindle.
I say since you already bought a used one, you might as well put it on, whats it going to hurt? When I first bought my car it had a bad hub, and the dealer replaced it with a used one, it lasted roughly 15,000 miles before the wheel-speed sensor inside it crapped out, but it still worked fine mechanically.
