Ok I have a 94 SSEI boneville, I am having a really hard time trying to find a little coolant leak that I have. The coolant is comming from the passenger side of the motor and is not comming out all that quickly. I replaced the waterpump on the weekend becuase I thought it was from there. The coolant seems to be running down the subframe and dripping off of it. Is there any prone peoblems/leaks from that side of the car. It barely leaks I leaked out around 3/4 of a litre of coolant from saturday to tuesday morning. It is a slow consistant leak that is not fun to deal with. My car seems to be running fine also. I did make sure that I cleaned off the surface Before I replaced the waterpump and torqued all the bolts properly and double checked them so I highly doubt that it is comming from there. Are there any coolant lines in that general vacinity that usually leak. I really do not want to resort to Bars Leak. :(

Thanks,

I had one of those tough leaks a while back. It was coming out slow enough that when the engine was hot it would evaporate and when it was cold, it wouldn't come out. You could try presurizing the coolant system when the engine is cold by connecting a compressor to the system. I don't know where to connect. You may have a bleed valve on the top of the thermostat housing that you could use or you could modify an old radiator cap. Take a look around. Be sure you keep the pressure under 15 psi. You don't want to blow anything up.

Replace the plastic coolant hose fitting on the passenger side of the LIM. They are plastic and are now starting to crack with age. It is most likely the culprit.

From what I was told that fitting was changed to a steel one a while back (Used to be Dad'* car and thats what he said). I will check that tomorrow though. Is there any other culprits that it could be? I just went outside to check and it had not leaked one drop since my first post so maybe its my immagination :?

Oh well thanks anyways.

BTW, what do you guys (and gals) think about using Bars Leak, I have heard many mixed feelings about it.

Thanks,

A couple problems I had with my 95 so far, 1st one was already said above, check the elbow. I also had a leak at the plastic fitting on the heater core hose. It was leaking on the frame. After I replace both hoses and that plastic piece I found that the O rings started to leak where the heater core hoses connect to the engine. Here is a picture of the plastic piece in the hose I'm talking about. bty, those hoses were a pain in the a$$ for me to replace, I only had some channellocks to remove the factory clamps. The ones on the firewall are the ones I had trouble with.

Hold on. Crystal'* is a 95 L36. Totally different coolant setup on the fittings.

Check the plastic bypass fitting as described. If it'* coming from there, Autozone, NAPA, and all the rest stock the Steel fitting.

Don't compare your coolant leaks to an L36. It'* a totally different animal in that regard.

Some of the common leak points are the metal tubes. Remember when replacing the water pump you needed to remove the two metal tubes that were held to the bracket by a nut and stud? Those o rings on the metal lines tend to stretch and can cause a leak. Also suspect might be your heater hoses although I'd think that would be easier to spot. Using a flashlight..look to both the entry areas for the tubes and that area.

I got those metal tubes in good with some silicone as well so they werent leaking. But now nothing leaks at all. I havnt leaked a drop for 2 days now :? Oh well my hoses pressurize which is telling me that it cant be leaking through the coolent system so all is well now.

Thanks,

Forcedinductionphool asked about using "Bars Leaks". That is an interesting question. I used to frown at using the stuff but with my Caddy, it says right in the service manual to use sealant in the coolant. I understand Caddy'* require it because of the aluminum engine, but if its OK for the Caddy, can it really hurt a Bonneville?
