I am having an issue with noise coming from what appears to be the front right side of the car. I the replaced the right front hub assmebly with no change in the noise but I noticed that the outer CV boot was throwing a considerable amount of grease. Would it be possible that the CV joint is causing my noise because it has become contaminated and worn out or is just too low on grease?

A little more info....

When turning right the noise, what could be described as a humming sound, goes away but when turning left the noise gets worse. This is why I feel it is the right side of the car and it appears to be coming from the front.

I would say front hub bearings AND a CV joint. That CV shouldn,t be throwing any grease at all. If it is .. its toast most likely.

I would look towards the same stuff. There should be NO grease coming out of the CV area. If any debris gets in there (such as sand or any road material) it will thrash the bearings.

A torn boot can thrash as already stated......and in as little as 5 miles.

I replaced the passenger side drive axle today. The noise is a little better but still there. As of now if, while driving down the road, I turn the wheel ever so slightly to the right then the noise completely goes away.

Am I looking at the correct side? I think the noise is coming from the front right. If I turn left it gets slightly worse and if I turn slightly right it goes away. Should I be looking at the left side?

Maybe the hub I put on is bad (it was a 47k miles used part from as salvage yard)?

What about tires? My front tires are getting a little bad and in need of replacement could these be the culprit? I don't think it would go away while turning right if this was the case.

What about an alignment? Perhpas the alignment being a little off is the cause?

I am open to suggestions? I guess first I need to decide if I am attacking the correct side. Then maybe try another hub if it is in fact the right side?

Do me a favor, Not that this is the problem, but I had it once and it resembled similar issues. Check your cat. See if you tap the cat and you can hear anything loose. I had similar issues (at lower speeds) and the cat turned out to be the issue beleive it or not. Something about the loewr speeds and thruput made the cat sound like a bad axle.

I replaced the drivers side hub and that solved my problems. Thanks for the suggestions.

I was gonna say...that noises in a car have a tendancy to propagate....ie ...sound like theyre coming from different locations than that they actually are.,,.being a car is actually a tin can.....lol...i have a noisy left front axle.....gonna change it someday.....along with the bearing/hub.....glad you found the problem.....
