RIGHT REAR CLUNK...
HELP.... on my 89 sse....at about 20 mph till i stop under light braking i get this stange clunk clunk clunk noise.....coming from what seems to be the right rear wheel.... well ive replaced the brake shoes.. and had the drums turned.....it went away for a couple of weeks, then came back .... been doing it for sometime.....i was hoping by now it would have gotton worst so that i could find the problem or just went away ... but its still there... the car has over 200,000 miles.. and sometimes the noise is bad enough to jerk the whole car.. and its only when im braking lightly... if i hit the brakes hard it does not do it...the wheel bearing also seems to be ok ... ????? help anyone......

This must be a 1989 "H" Body Phenomenon. I had a 1989 Buick LeSabre and at about 100,000 miles it developed that same "CLUNK" you described when lightly braking. I tried turning the drums and(like you) it went away for a short time but then came back. I finally purchased a set of New OE Drums for the Buick(replaced the Shoes too) and the problem went away. With 200,000 miles on your car, maybe it'* time to replace the Drums too. But be careful of the cheap China metal that'* out there.

ok here goes lol
after a while of the brakes moving on the backing plate, the tabs the contact the backing plate wear grooves into it. when you take the rear shoes off, check the backing plate and see the blocks that the shoe edge contacts it. i bet that there is a little groove wore into the backing plate. i have seen this so many times. there are a few ways to correct this.
1) weld the groove level and grind them flat
2) if they arent too bad, you can just grind them flat
3) get a new backing plate
always use a high temp brake lube on these contact points
almost everytime i came acroos this problem, i have just used a die grinder and made the flat and smooth again.

Will do you think it could be a brake prob, bad strut, or wheel bearing... I'm wondering if its a strut for me.. It only make noise upon braking and or take off.. I might need to check the brakes again too.. Any idea other than these above Will...

if you arent looking for the wear in the backing plate where the shoes make contact, its very easily missed. the first one i had do this was a jeep cherekee. i had the drums off like 4 times before i caught it. after i used my die grinder and flattened them out , no more noise when aplying the brakes at low speeds in the rear.
