Head Bolts - Torque Specification and Sequence
As the old '95 Bonneville SE is sittin' in the garage waiting for some parts, I'd like to know if anyone knows the torque specs and sequence for the head bolts. Thanks for your replies!

You'll notice that in Techinfo, Specifications, that particular torque spec is missing (you DID notice that article, right? )
It'* missing for a reason. It'* difficult to describe, and I don't want to be the one to tell you how to screw it up because we weren't on the same page (so to speak).
Buy Chilton'* #28200 and follow the procedure there. These are torque-to-yield bolts, and you only get one chance. Do NOT re-use the old bolts. EVER.

Yeah, I read that too, and it'* a torque-to-yield bolt in the Chilton'* manual, too.
Sounds a bit silly to me. I think if I had to take the heads off, I'd go for a set of ARP head bolts, because I'll bet the GM ones ain't cheap. ]

OK, I've got another question for you guys.
When we first got the car (used), we had problems with it. It was overheating and would not start. The dealer claimed that the balancing arm and head gaskets were shot, and that they would put in a "used motor" due to a betterment clause in the State laws.
We really don't know for sure if the dealer ever changed out the engine. So my question is this: How can we tell what YEAR the engine is?

Balance SHAFT? I've never heard of one or it'* bearings EVER going bad. And head gaskets? I've seen maybe 2 or 3 sets of head gaskets fail here EVER.
I'd bet you had the dreaded upper intake manifold failure, and someone didn't know what to diagnose or how.
Your 95 SE is the first year of the Series 2, so for the most part, you can assume the motor that went in isn't any OLDER than the old one.

My question is, Has a compression test ever been performed on this car to prove that the head gaskets were indeed shot?
Its incredibly rare for a 3800 to kill a head gasket unless its been ran very very hot... And the chances of the Balance shaft failing are slimmer... I have seen One balance shaft break... But thats one in the life of the 3800 engines 88-current...
I almsot have to Agree with Willwren here, as I have suffered the intake failure and learned the hard way about these intakes...
Does or has the car ever knocked? Did the oil at any time look like chocolate milk? Did or was this engine hydrolocked? Was there any coolant in the car when you bought it?

At the current time, we found the right bank #1 cylinder filled with water. The intake was also filled with water when we removed the plenum. The top of the intake manifold was covered in water and oil (or sludge). Is this an indication of intake manifold failure, and how could we be sure?
