Just adding my two cents worth...

I watched a show that did some research on oil, and the Wal-Mart oil actually did very well. The overall conclusion that the show came to was as long as you change your oil on a regular basis, the inexpensive store brand oil was as good as the bigger name oils . The difference came in longevity of the oil...if you go beyond the change time, the additives in the less expensive oil broke down quicker. The show was not enough for me to change from my Castrol Synthetic, but it did make me take notice.

The other interesting item that came up in here is the durability of the 3800. I read a story (somewhere) that GM was actually looking at eliminating or reducing the quality of some of the components of the 3800. The reason was that the 3800 was one of the most durable engines in the line-up. The manifold thing notwithstanding, the engine is solid and reliable with regualr service - no matter how you drive it. That too was a good read. Glad I have one again!

We pulled the heads of Jseabert'* L27 (Series 1) for a RARE head gasket leak last year. His internals looked like they had about 10k on them at the most. He had 180,000 MILES on it at the time. The rear valvetrain was a slightly darker caramel color than the front, which is normal due to the heat variation front to rear, but it looked DAMN good for it'* age.

Mine has almost 190,000 mi on it and i use pennzoil synthetic 10w30

I changed my oil today, and am really suprised how clean it was. It had 3400 miles on it and looked like 1,500. I ususally dont let it go that long, but I do my own oil changes and the weather has been really cold here and I have to drive 25 miles to my parents to do it as it is not allowed at my apartment.

ALWAYS use AC Delco filters too, Fram = teh sux!

My dad'* '71 Torino reached 200,000 easy, and still ran 4.5 sec 0-60'*. That has to say something for the 351 Cleveland block. Yeah, the Windsor block sucks...

That'* what I've been saying all along. I'm not attached to any one brand of oil or oil filters. I've used Exxon Super Flo 10W-30 that costs 59 cents a quart with a rebate and I've found that it performs and protects just as good as Castrol or Valvoline or even Wal-Mart brand oil. I have also been using Wal-Mart oil filters and found them to be just as good as the AC filters as well. I also have used Fram Oil Filters in the past and never had a problem with them so personally I think the claims of Fram filters somehow falling apart are grossly exagerated. I hear more probelens when people take their cars to those quicky lube places and have their oil filters falling off because they were not tighten correctly.
