Default Need some help..issues tonight

Hello,

About an hour ago we left to go get some food and the car started ok.(For the last few days it cranked a bit long but it did start.) A minute after we left, the check engine light came on and the speedometer did not work. So I got the bright idea to shut the car off at a light and re-start. Only problem was that it would not re-start, only cranked. I pushed it into a parking lot then started to check things. Fuel pump was fine, fuel at the rail. Disconnected the MAF sensor and had my wife try and start it. It started up and ran rough, I plugged the MAF back in and it settled down a bit. When I put the car in park, the RPM'* went up to around 3K. I shut it off. After we ate, it started right up, no code for about 30 seconds then the check engine light came back on, no speedometer and it just did not run right. Got it home.

So is all this because of a failing MAF sensor?

I don't have a code reader for this car but I do have access to a tech2 at work (On summer shutdown this week) I could go in to work and pull codes, but if you guys have ideas it would save me the trip

Thanks,
Static

Those code(*) would really be helpful. If Autozone was closer to you, stop by them and just have them read the codes.

On a side note, I'm wondering if the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) is doing this??

If you have codes, I can look up in my 1995 FSM and help you out.

VSS shouldn't cause a stall or hard start. Can cause the speedo and messed up shifting.

The codes will help point out the problem, so get it scanned. I'm thinking crank or cam sensor right now.

In my experience ....it shouldn't be cam sensor. That'* one of those...can leave it unplugged and have no problems. symptoms include 1 in 6 chance of the icm firing the correct cylinder first.

No..you shouldn't ask how I know. Cuz I ain't tellin

When I got this car, it had the cam code. I checked for the magnet and replaced the sensor. Turned out to be the computer. I replaced it and I have not had any problems until this.
I will try and get the codes read today. Seems like two different issues.

good amount there. Were you able to tell if they are current or history?

Do searches here for the 16XX codes to determine which items are controlled by the various drivers. Or convince Mike1995 to crack the books to list it all out.
