Just remember that I said I had never done this before and was only quoting the FSM. Didn't mean to lead you down the rosy path, lol.

popping the rod out and snapping it back togrther is not an easy task
it took me about an hour to put it back together
there is little room for doing the work. i used 2 screwdrivers
when i took it apart, the plastic connector fell off the rod and down into the dash
i had to find it, put it back on the metal rod, then snap it back together
that connection is about 4 or 5 inches behind the hole in the picture
