Default 1995 Bonneville ssei major problem

ok, you'll have to bear with me....i'm not the mechanical genius, my father is. I'm trying to remember everything he told me.....on my bonneville, there is a major problem. out of the blue it seemed, the car was not accelerating like it should of. when i'd put the pedal all the way to the floor, it was still took about 6 seconds to get up to 20mph! i became concerned and took it to my father, who noticed that the car was idling at an unusually high rpm. also the radio went out inexplicably. even though the radio came back on when i turned the car back on, i also noticed just sitting there idling that the heat gauge was going into the red. that was when my father noticed that the cooling fans were not working. he tested the battery and noticed that the voltage was slightly lower than normal, and it even lowered slightly when the car was turned back on. he took the alternator to a pontiac dealship and had it checked. it was perfectly fine. tonight, he had an idea and hooked the fans straight to the battery. they worked. so what'* causing the fans to fail to work?
the only thing that i can posilbly think of that i could have done was that i drove over a new speed bump at my apartments and felt the car go over roughly.
my father has been a expert mechanic for a long time.....if he'* stumped about something, it can't be good......does anyone have any clue as to what this might be? Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the club..

Now onto the car. I am assuming your father has checked the obvious stff like sparks plugs, air filter, catalytic converter, fuel filter, etc... (that stuff for the accel issue). Does the car stumble on acceleration or is it jusst slow? Does it rev ok in nuetral (like up to around 3500 rpm)? And do you have any SES/engine lights) on?

And for the fans and heat issues, these could be faulty relays. They are located at the top of the firewall behind the plastic shroud. Beyound that I am unsure why they wouldn't come on if the battery and alt are good.

I got 2 more thoughts:

1) maybe this is all related and you may have a faulty PCM. This may exlpain both issues.

2) well, I got a 95 SSEI and I also have the factory service manuls for your car. If you nedd any information (scematics, troubleshooting procedures, etc..) I can get them for you for your perticular car. BTW: where do you live?

Turn your AC on to AUTO. Do the fans come on? With it in Manual, they should come on at 220 or higher.

Your lack of power and overheating is a classic clogged catalytic converter. Bang on the cat with something. Do you hear any rattling?
