Default Some Alternator Replacement advice for a Newbie?

I combed through several threads but didn't find anything specific regarding a step by step. Which leads me to believe that this could be a very simple job?

A buddy of mine has a 1993 Non Turbo. He purchased a new alternator for it and is asking me to help him put it in. Without sounding cocky i am a "do-it-yourself-er" and am pretty handy when it comes to auto repair, although 99% of my experience is on E30 BMW'*.

I have never even seen the engine bay of his Bonneville but i am confident that i can handle task. Of course the car is stuck in the parking lot of his apartment complex 30min away from my house, so i would have to bring my tools with me and be well prepared to work on it. I wanted to ask you guys, from one gear head to another, are there any tips or tricks to this job? Any good pointers for a first timer getting dirty with a Bonneville?

All input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

What you meant to say is 1993 Non Supercharged (they don't come from the factory with a turbo).

Alternator shouldn't be a bad job. I've got a different series engine than you, but mine was disconnect battery, remove serpentine belt, remove two bolts, reverse process.

Edit: Mine only had 2 bolts since I didn't have a support bracket at the time. FYI

Should be easy, you will need a 15mm socket to remove the serp belt. If I remember right, the alt is on with 13mm bolts. I think the battery cable is on the battery with a 8mm bolt. and I think the battery cable on the alt is 13mm. For the most part, you only need a 10mm, 13mm and 15mm to work on these cars.

Yep.. it'* pretty straight forward. Like Dan said.. if you have a 10mm, 13mm, and 15mm you'll be able to disassemble about 95% of the car.

If it takes you more than 15 minutes to do the whole job, you should proceed to bash your forehead against the concrete. :P Its a fairly quick job.

There'* a pigtail connector going into the bottom of the alternator, but you'll notice that.

On my alternator, which has the same engine, it was a 10mm nut that held the power wire onto it. An adjustable wrench might help.
