Fuel Pump Reincarnation
Wise tale or Fact ???? A local used car dealer/shop owner told me that he has taken a rubber hammer and beat on the gas tank when an in tank fuel pump has gone out. Says it works most of the time! Anybody ever tried this??? Results??? NOTE He says not to kill it until you get to where you are going because it won't work twice.. Any comments, tips etc. on intank fuel pumps welcome.

Yes it also works on dying blower motors. The brushes get flats on them and loose contact, so when you hit is SOMETIMES it give it the jolt to keep going. But if the motor turns off back in the same position with the flats it won't work again right away.

Also they get burnt spots on the Commutator, which prevents contact from the brushes. That'* what happened to my starter ~1 year ago. It took either trying the starter 20 some times, or tapping it with a screwdriver or hammer.
Bill also made a good point, if you do get it to work, it is time for you to replace it. May as well use the car to drive to the parts store, but leave it running

We have actually tapped on the starter while trying to turn it over... Usually after a few good whacks it goes...
I have never heard of a fuel pump whirring back to life... Usually I think they fry...
Sometimes its an electrical problem, other times the gyrator(spelling) just goes bad... Have seen people run out of fuel and murder the pump...

I just replaced my pump a couple of weeks ago and tried the tapping on the tank in order to be able to drive it into the garage to do the repairs and after trying about 70 times on various accasions with various force.........No Luck. But hey .....it doesn't hurt to try. It was on a 90, SSE.
