Default CV Axle installation help

Just got a 1990 Bonneville and it has a very bad vibration at highway speeds coming from the drivers side front end. The CV axle seemed to have too much slop in it so I decided to change it. I got it out fine but I cannot get the new one to engage the wheel hub spline. I gave up and tried my old one again just to see and got that one in fine, but then I couldn't get the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle, it looked way too far off. Can anyone offer any tips to finish this off? Also, was it worthwhile to change this for the shaking problem? This is my first FWD car so I'm learning.

I was just following the *ahem* Haynes manual. I did get it, just needed some finesse. It was all in vain though, I'm pretty sure the shaking was loose strut to knuckle bolts, they had 50 ft-lbs tops if not less. Thanks for the reply.
