MAF censor
What is the purpose of the MAF sencor. Does it affect milage, engine performance,
or starting. I replaced the one on the car with one that come off our 89 Bonney. Tonight we went to town and the car seemed to run better and had a lot more jam.Or could I be imagining things thanks duncan

The MAF sensor tells the PCM how much air is entering the engine. When the sensor is working right, then the AFR is correct. If the PCM is getting bad data, it can't get the fuel ratio correct.

Yes, it will effect the performance. The PCM has a table called the VE table, these are numbers the PCM will use in place of the MAF numbers. But these are not nearly as good as real data.
