Too all you gearheads out there....I have a question!!!
I have a 1989 Bonneville SSE. After much work and hastle I have pin pointed my rattle in my engine at idle......The annoying and sometimes loud rattle is coming from my Crank pully or crank....I dont have a service manual as of yet as Im on kind of a budget. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on possiblities on what it could be and what it might take to fix?
Thanks in advance Guys

The crank pulley (harmonic balancer) is built with a rubber ring between inner and outer metal portions. The rubber can get cracked because of age and allow it to rattle really bad at idle. It'* a few hours of labor, the part itself is somewhere around $150, I think.

It would be really strange if it was the same thing mine did saturday I heard a metallic "tink tink" sound as the car idled, coming from somewhere on the front of the engine. It ended up being the crank sensor-somehow it came loose & was just barely touching the balancer ring as the engine rotated. A slight adjustment & all was fine.
Just take the belt off & start the engine for a second, you should be able to pinpoint if the noise is coming off an accessory or the crank area.

did all that...it still makes the noise....it is less noticable with the belt off...but it is still there..the harmonic balancer is the issue
