Default engine type in an 87 LE? not 3800

Havent seen the car yet, seller says its got a rod knocking and a state fine on the title. I don't have the VIN in front of me but I think it was an H. Is this a dramatically different engine than the VIN "C"? I have my heart set on a true 3800 but this one is priced right. Some of us probably pay more for cable tv every month LOL but I would still have to tow it home. body straight, 120k on it, interior fair. I might go look this weekend (100 miles away) Not afraid to pull and rebuild an engine but if this one isnt desirable I will probably pass

In '87, I know that it'* not a "c" engine, and not called the 3800. I forget what the actual letter designation was for those. It is, more or less, the same engine as the 3800. The "c" 3800 was updated a bit, made more power, etc. I think that the '87'* made around 150 hp, and the "c" unit makes 165. Torque, I don't know.

Anyway, it'* the same bacic thing. It'* just one step farther back in technology.

I'd say if you like the car, and it'* cheap enough, go for it. On the other hand, 120k is really early for a 3.8 to die... makes me wonder if the previous owner didn't maintain it, and what that means for the rest of the car...

Oh yeah... that engine would be a "3", and it does (did) indeed make 150 hp. They ran those part way into the '88 year, give or take. Then the "c" took it from there until around '92, and so on.

well the title problems were caused by driving thru a tollgate without paying if that tells you about the previous owner, probably drove it into the ground. He claims that he is just trying to sell the car for his friend, does start and run but the engine knocks loudly. Body clean and straight, 4 inflated tires and all the glass/interior there. Said something about it not even being worth a good steak dinner and it should probably go to the junkyard. I told him I might try to come look this weekend. We shall see what this weekend brings..its been advertised for a long time.

Dude. You should offer to treat him to a steak dinner, if he'll sign over the car.

How do you think I "recalled" that his engine was a "3" so quickly?

And thanks, crzydmnd72, for visiting the site. My '89 isn't exactly in pristine condition anymore, but I love it and plan to drive it until it dies a permanent and unrepairable death. I use it for all it'* worth, as you can see if you look closely at my avatar... There'* a christmas tree tied on top of the car. That tree wasn't baled either. This year, we baled it, and that works better. It'* also carried a queen sized mattress at 45 mph, but that gets a bit scarry.
