Hi,

Got a problem with my hi-beam. If I pull the turn signal leaver towards me, the hi-beam comes on, but as soon as I let go of the leaver the hi-beam comes off. So my problem is that the bi-beam does´nt stay on when I let go off the leaver :(

Any ideas?

something else?

I could make a new system for the hi-beam with a new relay and just using the old trigger cable from th existing hi-beam system to the new relay, but it would be nice to get the original system to work.

Just to make sure now, you have the head lights on before turning on the highs right? I wish I could remember now if maybe our cars push back to hold and pull forward to flash... damn car learning curves!

we had this problem too, but with a nice package of other problems. basically, the whole turn signal assembly came loose on ours, and the highbeamswicth came with it. we ended up having to take the steering wheel off, and taking the column apart.

i suspect either the high beam switch is loose, or bad.

Yepp, have a feeling that the switch is busted, easy to replace/get out? Or shuld i just rewire the hi-beam with a new relay and use the normal engagement as a signal to my new relay, will use a holding circuit relay, so shuld work like that.

quite frankly, i cant remember. i believe it was a pain in the butt, but my dad was the one that did it. we never tried messing with the high beam switch, just the turn signal clicker.

subsequently (and not to hijack the post) but my high beams are out too
my prob is that switching them on does NOTHING, the regular low beams stay on and are unphased. I tried pushing the switch manually etc.

This all happened after the like 5th time i've taken my steering wheel off and removed some stuff in order to tighten a few loose screws in there on my column shift. I'm gonna take it appart againa nd see if i can fix it but i know exactly what activates the high beem switch,
it'* just an extra long rod that goes from the turn signal switch all the way to the high beam switch, its basically a button thats pressed by the rod (which is moved by you when you pull up on the signal switch). I can't get the switch to do anything now, but i'll have to do some more diagnosis on it

to get to the high beam switch just remove the wing-nutted trim plate under the column (what you'd remove to get to the fuses
then remove the black steel plate thats under that (a few small screws)

Then you should be able to see the small metal rod that activates the switch via your turn signal lever. Move your signal lever (just like you would to turn on high beams) and you'll quickly see where it is cuz the rod moves.

Lets hope you (we) fix this problem!

Thnx, I´ll check the switch tomorrow and hope that I can find a easy solution to the problem there!

If not I bought new relays and cables today, so that I can rewire the hibeam system.

let me know how it goes. you can test the switch to see if its switchin its power as it should while its mounted on the car , you'd have to tap into a few wires but you seem more than knoweledgable in the electrical stuff. Let me know what you find, I'll have to have at mine this weekend or sometime very soon.. inspection is almost up! and i gotta fix that cat.

wait, does the switch click when you pull it? or does it just pull all the way until it switches with no stopping? never thought to ask

In my 1990 LE, the high beam switch pulls back towards you and clicks into place like so on any car. Never tried pushing forwards but it would be nice if the car had the flashing abiltity on it.
