Is there a problem with '87-'91 bonnies getting water in the trunk? I seem to have some kind of hidden leak at each bottom corner of the back window. After washing the car today, I felt up under the far back corners of the trunk opening, and there was water coming in from somewhere up in there.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I waded back a few pages into the archives of this forum and didn't see anything. IF I could find the leak, i'd goop it with sealant, but I figure i'll ask you guys before I start blindly tearing up my beloved car.

Not sure about your body style, but the early 92-95'* had this problem. It was leaking in between the glass and the rubber rear window seal, then down into the trunk. Sounds like yours might be similar considering where you found it underneath. But again, I don't know if 87-91 had this problem typically.

My trunk leaks. The carpet in the trunk near the taillight area is always damp or frozen, based on the temperature.

I assumed it was the seals that had gone bad. I plan on resealing the car this spring. However, on 87-91'*, the rear glass is nearly vertical. Where the glass meets the trunk, there is a stainless steel bar coated in a black stiff plastic material. Mine is chipping away at an alarming rate. I figure that if I get the seals redone, even if it is the stainless steel bar that allows the passage of water, then the new seals should stop the problem.

Thanks for the feedback. It'* not a bad enough problem to motivate me to start taking her apart quite yet, since I rarely use the trunk. Gotta love the huge back seat.

I will be needing new door seals sometime. How much does such a thing usually cost? How is it done, or alternately, who does it?

As I mentioned, I'm going to see if my body shop will do the seals. A family friend of ours has a shop and specializes in body repair. My fingers are crossed that he can do it. Check out local body shops and see what they say

Or, you could always pruchase the parts from GM and any mechanic can do, thats what I was told at my local Midas shop.

I hate hearing wind noises along the doors on the highway. The water in the trunk is just uncovienient. Gotta do the seals!

Mine has the same problem. There is always water in the trunk but i think it is a combonation of leakage and condensation.

The condensation on the inside of the trunk roof is really brutal. It drips down into in the trunk and soaks things..whatever is in there. The condensate freezes when the temp changes.

I assume it is the seals allowing water in, combining with the heated air inside the cabin.

I don't think there would be any condensation on your trunk lid if there wasn't already a leak somewhere else. It'* kinda like the bathroom windows fogging up when you take a shower. I don't think much (if any) additional water is coming in due to condensation. The condensation and resulting drippage is just result of a water leak somewhere else. All in my opinion, but I think i'm correct on this.

I can get you the gm part numbers for all the seals. Then just run them thru gmpartsdirect. For example, you have an inner and outer and lower strip of weatherstripping on the back doors. Ballpark figures, outer should be 45 bucks per door. Lower sealing strip is about 2 bucks per door, and inner weatherstipping is about 12 bucks per door.

I don't have that kind of money floating around right now, or i'd be interested. I'm waiting on my tax return, and i might use that to get me another bonnie. Then I can sell my lemon of a '96 grand am. I hate that car. I've been tempted to total it for the insurance money. in the 9 months i've owned it, i've had to replace two wheel bearings, two ABS sensors, some wiring, and the radiator. Grrrrr... #$*@ POS...
