So i talked to some transmission plaes the other day to see about fixing my tranny. (doesnt shift into 4 and no lock up) I adjusted my tv cable, and the guy told me that even though you adjust the cable it might still be sticking inside. And that they can kinda break it loose. He also said that briefly shifting into park for a split second while driving cpould be enough to loosen up whatever the problem may be. I will never try this, just to make myself clear. but is there any truth to what he says? btw, this guy tells me that they only made one final ratio for these trannies before 92..and kept trying to convice me. I wont let him touch my car. but could there be something i can do without taking anything apart?

you can accomplish the same thing as the park thing if you drop into first gear, take her up to about 25 MPH or so, and work the gas so it makes the car buck. while it is still hard on everything, if you dont do it to often, and are sure all is solid under the hood, you could get away with it. also, is your shifter linkage out of adjustment? that could be the issue too.

Wow that guy was a complete moron. Yes i suppose the valve in the valvebody could stick, and just pressing at releasing the gas in LOW very well might unstick it. And YES there were several final drives before '92, such as a 2.73 (my car, crusing) a 2.84 (good mix of performance and economy) and a 3.33 (rarest option from what i hear, usually only SSE'*) I'd run away from this guy and stick to these boards. Lol

Theres also a 2.97 final drive ratio, thats the one I have. But by all means...go on the freeway and slam 'er into park to free up that cable. Maybe it will fix the cable, but I don't know how the rest of the tranny/car will like it.

No way will you be able to fix a sticking anything by beating your car around. Not going to happen, and could just cause more damage.

If you haven't, it can't hurt. Grab a bottle of Sea-Foam Transmission something [i think it'* tune, but I don't remember now.. but it says transmission on it]. Pour in the whole bottle [don't worry about overfilling it]. Drive around 100 miles or so. Then flush the tranny [not drain 'n fill, flush]. If anything, that will fix it. That stuff made a HUGE difference in my tranny'* shifting qualities. It would take ~5 sec to go from 2 -> 1 using the shifter. After using it was ~1 sec 2 -> 1. Plus it felt as though the car 'hooked up' better.. like it would throw you back in your seat better in first gear. Try getting some Valvoline High Mileage Dex 3 [to use after the flushing].. can't hurt, and it is only $.10 more than the regular.

You have all confirmed my suspicions this guy was from some sketchy looking outfit and i wouldnt even trust my car in theyre garage. he also referred to a method they use (but dont tell customers about) called "beating the tranny around a bit' to free up stuff inside. yes, free up all those pesky nuts and bolts holding it together. He also said that the sticker on the spare tire cover doesnt really mean much. And that GX3 doesnt mean 3.33, because theres only one ratio.....

Wow, what a bunch of retards. Call them up, and try to talk to the highest ranked person, and tell them your story. May not make a difference, but it can't hurt.

Beat it around? More like joy-riding for the employees. Unfortunately, this is the case for a lot of transmission shops. Most are there just to rip you off.

Oh yes 2.97 i forgot that one. Yes tranny shops are the most difficult i think to find a decent one of because most everyone will explain and believe a tranny problem as "needs replaced". The best thing to do is talk to people u know who have gotten work done. Get some good stories then check it out for yourself. Of course, the best thing is doing the work yourself but not all of us can do that. I don't know if you have TSI transmission in your area but they do excellent work here.

The biggest thing with all kinds of work [especially car mechanical related things], is to be informed. Know what you are talking about. Don't say "Oh, well my car doesn't move.. but the engine runs.. what'* wrong with my car?" The mechanic will call his wife, saying "Sweetie, call the Travel Agent, we are going to Hawaii!"

It'* like the Lounge Thread, with the Muffler Bearing. Anyone know if Intense would do a rebuild? Probably wouldn't be the cheapest, however you would know it was good, and you could always get some goodies

If the tranny doesn't slip, try what I suggested above.. it can't hurt, and that has the best chance of fixing your problem. Also, run it through all the gears when doing it [forgot to add that]. Manual shift her.. don't worry, 100 miles of manual shifting won't be a problem.
