Default cluster and temp guage question

I have an 89 Bonneville. The temp guage in my current cluster does not work. My question is are u able to change the temp guage from my cluster that the temp guage works? Reason is the DIC and Compass dont work in the cluster with the working guage. Also wondering the DIC and compass dont seem to work unless it is warm or hot outside and inside the car. Any ideas to why it would do this? And any suggestions on how to correct it?

any help would be great

Thanks in advance

other than that I LOVE MY BONNEVILLE

nothin gives me great pleasure of leaving a RICE BURNER in the dust at the lights!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA

First off, yes you can switch only the temp gauge from the donor cluster, to the recipient. However, the easier method, would be to swap out the whole temp/oil pressure/volt meter part-cluster. The gauges are glued to that piece, and it would just be easier to the the ladder.

As far as the DIC and Compass.. there is a resistor or diode that is the culprit to why the DIC and Compass do not work, sitting in the compass. After 16 years of use, these small electronic parts don't like to work as well as they did "back in the day." I'm still working on which one, or how to go about fixing the problem. I have been very busy lately, and cannot attempt this until spring [at the very least]. Just so you know, the Compass and DIC can be removed from the cluster with a few screws.. so if you want to just swap out the entire cluster, you can just remove it'* DIC and Compass, and put in your'*. Perhaps donate your Compass and DIC to my research [hey, it'* worth a shot ].

I really haven't looked into the problem at all, so this is uneducated, but have you ruled out a bad temperature sensor? If it is a possibility, you might want to rule that out first, before you tear into the dash.

This is true. Our engines are prone to oil getting on the ground wire for the temp sensor.. thus the sensor is beyond off. I don't believe the temp sensor does the "full sweep" thing upon startup.. can anyone confirm this? You could also test the gauge'* wiring when you pull the cluster to see if you are reading anything. The pin is B16, but it'* the pin just below the top pin, located on the left of the connector. Ground it, you should recieve between 1365ohms [100*F] and 55ohms [250*F]. If you do not recieve something between that, the sensor has failed [most likely].

the donor clusters temp guage works in my car when it is installed. So I dont think that the sensor is faulty.

as far as the DIC and compass is concerned....it works fine when its warm. Perhaps its just dirty?

also the tripometer doesnt work in the new cluster but does when the old cluster is put back in...any ideas?

haha, our I/P'* are beyond similar. The DIC and Compass don't work, because like I have already stated, there is a resistor or diode somewhere in the circuit that is the root cause of all the problems.. and this is why sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. The trip doesn't work, because there is a broken gear between the odo and the trip. If you disassemble the clusters, you can remove the odo/trip assembly.. and replace them in your car. There is one special way to reverse the cluster'* odo mileage, without showing the silver lines.. and guess what? I'm not going to tell you!! haha.. PM me, and i'll tell you [we don't need everyone knowing how to do something illegal, and doing fraudilant {sp?} actions, now do we?]. Hope that helps.. I have my original cluster [that is stripped], but I can explain further with pics, if you need.
