Hey everyone.. this no heat issue is really pissing me off..

I changed the themostat, no change, I just flushed out the whole system, nothing. Checked the vaccum lines.. everything is in order.
Here is where my temp gauge sits after a long drive, thats as far as it goes up. If I let the car idle for a good 10 min. the gauge will go up a little bit but not much but the car does get warm as I idle but when I start to drive it jumps right back down to 40. thats it! I dunno what else to do.

I knwo that putting the stat is fail proof like really, but ive heard u can install it wrong? Im like 99% sure I installed it properly so im sure it cant be that.

There is a secondary gasket used to seal the thermostat in the housing, apparently in vey cold conditions enough coolant can flow around the thermostat to keep the engine temp down. The exact part number escapes me but was posted recently.

The second factor is that on cars with ATC (Automatic temperature control) there is a rod that goes from the programmer to the hot/cold diverter valve behind the glovebox. (Non ATC cars do it differently) These can jam which leaves the air bypassing the heater core. AFAIR full hot is with the rod pulled back toward the programmer as far as it can go.

Finally, the temp guages are notoriously inaccurate. What you need is either a scan tool or the hand on the top radiator hose trick. If hot you should have heat.

BTW almost all thermostats install with the pointy end up. One side should say either "to radiator" or "to engine" install appropriately.

I was just going to suggest the secondary gasket, do you have two, or just one? The one that counts for that, is the one that goes between the tstat, and housing, not the oring between the housing and the intake.

Be careful on that rod.. I broke mine on accident, just because I thought it was something else [don't ask what I thought it was]..

I have a weird problem sort of like this. Again, it'* on my 87 bonne, non ATC. I can only get heat when the selector is in heat or defrost mode. Will not blow heat in bi-lev, vent, or any other position. Is this how it'* designed or is there a problem somewhere?

Hey thanks for the quick replies, I got that gasket in the car but I also have the 2nd gasket which you apply with the gasket sealer product that I got from Crappy Tire. So I do have 2 gaskets. 1 that rubber one, the other is the one I applied. The car does not have that automatic heating system, but im sure it has nothing to do with what you talked about.

The problem is the car idles, and the engine warms up which brings me the nice warm heat coming into the car, OK no problems but when I start to drive it jumps down to 40 and stays there, and the air turns into just normal cold air. Agian If I let the car sit it will warm up If I drive the car will cool instantly. This is tricky I never delt with this before.

Im really confused about that rod that you were mentioning but im not even gonna bother because I belive ti has nothing to do with that.

Reguardless of how new, what you describe sounds like a thermostat that is stuck open.

I will change it to the new one I got see if that improves anything.
Just kinda hard to do it any day soon, we are getting hit with -32 deg. C weather here.

SO ... that was the problem after all.. I installed a faulty one.. I got the new one put in at my work.
