EIN location on 1990 3.8 engine
I have some confusing situation with local police registration office. They tried to find EIN on my engine but failed . There is no any in the places listed in Haynes manual (near starter and waterpump). Local GM dealer guy told me that it'* usual problem with old GM cars and there was no any EIN displayed. Have you got any ideas what should I tell to the cops?
My VIN 1G2HX51C3L1230171.
Many thanks in advance,

you should tell them to use the vin number off the whole vehicle, that should give them all the info they need on parts..i dont see why they would need just the number of the engine..

if the eigth digit of your VIN is 3, then your EIN is on the lower left bank, right near where the transmission connects. It is possitioned vertically.

That is stupid registration rules in Russia . In our registration card there is a field named "Engine #". They can put there "n/a" but they need any formal confirmation that EIN absence is normal (for example engine # wasn't deleted by any thiefs who stealed the car ). So my question is: does any GM engine have to got EIN or in some cases it may be produced without it?
Many thanks again,
