Hi everybody. In August I picked up a 1990 Bonne for $1 from a co-worker who babied it for 15 years. I needed a cheap (er, 'inexpensive') commuter car. It came with a few issues (brakes, strut, alternator) and then just when it got colder outside it would NOT start. Turned over like crazy but just wouldn't fire up.
Later in the day when it warmed up it would fire up instantly. The list of possibilities was a bit daunting considering i don't have a lot of cash to invest right now. That is why i turned to the 'net to find out who might have had a similar problem as mine and help me with the diagnosis.
Using the 'search' feature i found a few posts that listed the ICM/Coils as a potential problem. One morning, about close to freezing outside, the car wouldn't start (again) so I tested out the theory and used a hair blowdryer to heat up the old (Magnavox) coilpack. Less than 60 sec. of warming it up, tried to start it and BANG, it fired right up!! So using the advice of several members here i tracked down a Delco type 2 unit from an auto wrecker and my dad helped me slap it on. Took less than 30 mins start to finish. Fired instantly up this morning and halelujah, I got my new/old car back!
I just want to give a big SHOUT OUT to all you experts on this forum who were instrumental in helping me with this problem. THANK YOU!! THIS FORUM ROCKS!!bs2
