Hi guys-hope you can help. My first series 3.8 is unhappy-cuts out badly under 1700rpm.Won't idle. At 1500rpm it cuts out intermittantly, below that more frequently until stall. No codes from computer (except 12). Replaced MAF and fuel press reg on spec.Above 1700 rpm it is happy as a lark. Ideas?
Thanks!
PS: I adjusted the crank sensor as it has been contacting the interupter, seemed to make it worse, so I ordered a new one. We'll see.
Replaced crank sensor but still ran poorly, then ECM gave code 42. Replaced ICM but won't stay running. Probably flooded now, trying reset.
Replaced fuel filter and sparkplugs on spec. Back to original problem but misses above 2000 rpm now. Seems to flood easily. I am thinking injector trouble.
Thanks!

Have you replaced the ECM or at least tested with another ECM from an 87 with a 3.8?

Thanks for your reply. No, I have not tried the ECM yet. At the moment it won't run, but will try to start. This supports your suggestion, as the ECM takes over from the ICM above 600rpm. I was about to rip out the injectors and have them tested but perhaps the ECM idea would be less painless. Is there any practical way to check if the timing chain has jumped? I have managed to cause a few backfires.

Let me explain a few things...
The 87'* came from the factory with an alluminum timming gear that had Nylon teeth on it... If it was replaced it would have an all steel gear.... If memory serves the 88'* should have the steel gear( Vin 3 )... So out of time is a possibility...
Its hard to say what the problem is going to be as we can't be there to look at the car and see what its doing...

Replaced ECM and reused PROM. Won't start-sounds to me like I haved jumped the chain. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and pull off the front end. Fortunately, most of the stuff I have done so far needed doing, that extends to the timing chain if it did jump. My wife loves the car so I guess it'* worth it. Unfortunately, if I get close to $1500 in repairs, I might have been able to buy a better one!!!!

At this point, I may have already fixed the trouble but caused another. If I am right, then the timing chain needed doing. Is it neccessary to raise the motor (as per my factory manual) to remove the cover?

It may help you to unbolt the mounts on the passenger side of the engine so you can place a board of wood on a floor jack and jack the engine up and down a bit... Will most likely aid you .... But I don't think its necessary to do so...

Update
So, I am at work doing an overtime shift (to pay for the parts!) when my tow truck buddy shows up to move the car to another buddy'* place where I can do the work. Buddy #1 has another buddy who does mechanical work with him and the two of them set to. They get it running and tell me all they did was crack the fuel rail port to check for pressure and adjust the crank sensor (I am not buying this, I set it up carefully) and it ran fine. My wife phones me and tells me the news. I tell her to go try it herself. Won't start.
Here'* the thing. They relieved the fuel pressure. I wonder if my return line is plugged. I know - if I had checked the fuel pressure I would have discovered this. I will try to get a guage tomorrow. For now, though, I think I will have a drink.
