Hey folks -I just joined . Here is the problem, -- 1990 SE --3800 engine-- 345,000 kilometers .Owned since new. It has those great silver cross lase wheels with the 2 part center hub. I am a 53 year old non smoker with no kids so the grey cloth interior is in great shape- she has always run like a thouroughbred-- I have put thousands of dollars in parts over the last 2 years . If I cant figure this one out she goes up for sale or gets parted out. ( its quite a parts list )
I have spark but no fuel ( If i spray a little injector cleaner into the throtle body ,she fires right up and then stalls as the spray gets consumed . I am thinking its the fuel pump relay as I no longer hear the pump kick in when i turn the key . Problem is I dont know where the relay is on the bonnie. or what it looks like
any one have any ideas ???

Behind the battery you will find what appears to be an unconnected wire. It'* a green connector and has a gray wire. This is the fuel pump test lead. You can use a test light or a volt meter to check for +12v. Upon turning the ignition on, you should see +12v on that circuit for two seconds if the car is not started. If there is voltage, check the gray wire at the tank harness. If there is no voltage, check the fuse and the relay.

Thanks for the help.
I put a tester on it and I have the 2 second voltage so I guess the relay and fuses are ok.
It still cranks over really well . and cranks long enough to register good oil pressure.
I still cant hear the fuel pump kicking in

I dont have any hoist I can use. and I have never looked for the tank harness --exactly where is this tank harness. ?
On some fords there is an enertia fuel cutoff switch in the trunk --do you think maybe GM might have put somthing like that in the bonnie.

I also got frustrated and started pumping the gas pedal --I can smell fuel when I do that

GM doesn't have the fuel pump cut off like the Fords do... at least the Bonnevilles don't. The tank harness exits the vehicle through a grommet behind the back seat on the passenger'* side. The harness then travels along the top of the tank to the sending unit. There should be enough slack to pull it down to get at the connector. Test both the power (gray) and ground (black or black/white on both sides of the connector.

When I bought my 90, it wouldn't start either. After a couple of hours troubleshooting a new fuel pump I found that the ground wire going into the connector had corroded and split. I bypassed the connector and everything worked. If you have both power and ground on both sided of the connector the problem is most likely the fuel pump itself.

Hi there, Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Life got in the way.
My 1990 SE is parked off to one side of the garage. I had to go and buy a new car , and no unfortunatly its not another bonnyville. The new ride is a 2005 chevey malibu max. It does the job but its no bonnyville. Its kind of wierd driving a car where everything works properly. It just doesnt seem to have any soul.
The bonny may end up being parted out or it may become a summer project car.
Winter in alberta in an unheated garage is no time to be dropping the gas tank.
Over the last 2 years I had the tranny rebuilt, all new struts front and back , tower brace,new water pump, alternator ,radiator ,and hoses , new goodyear assurance tripple treads , new windshield ,spark plugs and wires, a couple of new center caps for the wheels ( I have all 4 wheels complete ) I found a place down south that had the perfect fit clear headlight covers.
Thers probably some other stuff that I cant think of right now.
I think I put about $6,000 parts and labour into it..
It would be great to be able to sell it to someone in the club who would keep her going .The body is still in pretty good shape,and the interior is good . Not ever having kids the rear interior is showroom . I just really dont know what I m going to do. Time is always a problem for me .

The only things that dont work on it are the fuel pump, the rear passanger power window, the air conditioning and the power steering hoses leak. other than that it runs really strong , sorry --ran really strong.

I had an idea as to why the fuel pump failed . Over the last 2 years i put a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner into the tank with every other fill up. I wonder if this trashed the pump?
Any way thats wher I stand with it now
