Default Back Door Windows?

Why did GM make the rear windows go down only half way? Is there a way to perhaps drop the window by about an 1inch, to 1 1/2 inches or is there no modification for this problem? .

Default shape & safety

First, the deal with windows lowering only 1/2 way dates back ~20 years. The NHTSA came out with a study that said (basically) children in the back seats should not be able to reach outside. Or, having windows all the way down posed a safety risk to young passengers seated in the back. (something to that effect) So the auto manuf'* were forced to comply for safety reasons. In older cars, you may be able to modify the drop IF the window regulator and window slides will accomodate the extra travel.

Secondly, as 4dr cars got smaller, the shape of the door does not accomodate a square window. Therefore, the shape of the door limits how far the window can be lowered. There is no way around this limitation.

Thanks a lot MartyC, that sure saved a lot of unnessary work, and research. I didn't figure that it may have had something to do with safety, and as well children in the back seat. Also the door designs would make a lot of sense too!

Having the smoked rain guards on the doors also takes some viewing space away to, but they help when it rains. Thanks a million dude! .

If memory serves me correctly. Some of the original Pontiac 6000'* were designed so that the Rear Door Windows were fixed in place. This was another example of GM Accountants designing the car with the thinking that most peple do not need the rear window to go down since the car is air conditioned and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, it saves money!!! GM Accountants cringe at the word Safety.
