Default 440-T4 slipping after rebuild.

OK so i jsut rebuilt the tranny on my '87 LE. Boy was it bad in there. Whoever had it before overheated it beyond belief. So i put all new seals and clutchs in it, bolted her back in, filled it up. Worked great. SO now i've got about 75 miles on the rebuild and i was driving it the other day. I noticed that when i really accelerated hard out of the hole, it would slip between 1-2 shift. By accelerating hard i mean it slips at a 6000 RPM shift. That'* right stock 200k mile LG3 6000 Revs. I know i'm an idiot. But any other shift than that is fine at high rpm, and 1-2 is fine below 4500-5000. Got any ideas?

Your fuel cutoff is at 5700 or maybe 5900 rpm, so your tach is off.

Keep the revs below 5k, k bud?

What kind of ATF did you use after the rebuild?

After learning my tach isn't accurate, I am going to keep the revs below 4800 to be safe. I'd rather keep my engine, thank you very much. With a non-adjusted TV Cable, mine would shift at 5k. After I adjusted it per manual specs, it would shift at 5100rpm.

Our cars do have governors, however. Mine used to work.. at 5200rpm [on the tach] it would flicker the RPMs about 200rpm below, then up, then below.. not very fast, though. Or it would automatically drop the car into second.. or it would act like it dropped into second. I have done a little searching on the governor, and IIRC it should drop the car into 2nd..

I do that whenever I drive my mom'* car... the passenger can't see the 1/2 tach .

I just put dexron 3 in it, with a quart of lucas transmission conditioner ans stopslip. By the way, i've seen a lot about Transtune on this forum. If any of you can purchase lucas, get it. It works as well as the seafoam, only the transmission doesn't have to be drained to get rid of it. It stays in the transmission and continually works. But enough advertising, i thought i read somewhere in here that in '87 they did not put a rev limiter on the engine? I thought my tach was off too but i used a tool and it was within 200 RPM of what was indicated. I drove it again today, and i couldn't get it to repeat. Maybe it was just a combination of the conditions. Also, my shifts are REALLY soft. Could this be a bad/sticky vacuum modulator? Where can i get an adjustable one? And last ? i swear, can it be installed just by pulling the old one out and putting the new one it? I noticed when i rebuilt it that there was a rod that goes into the VB. I don't want this falling into the side pan. Then i'd really be screwed. Thanks!

You may have better results running DexII, even though you put in new clutches. Our transmissions were designed to run with DexII originally, so chances are they will run better with it. I struggle finding DexII so you may need to search around for it. It'* out there, though.

Thanks for the tip on the Lucas.. I have been very curious of it'* effectiveness.. and very is an understatement.

The shifts being smooth is good. That'* the way they are supposed to be. If you didn't replace your vacuum modulator when you rebuilt the transmission, do so now. A little bit of searching on my part returned the 4T60-E has an adjustable Vacuum Modulator, and is the exact same size as ours, only smaller on the external end [internally it'* the same, however]. Just ask for a Vacuum Modulator for a '93 Bonnie [I say '93, because some places are a year off between generations, and just to be sure, you know?]. I have not purchased one myself, since I can never track one down [haven't tried hard though]. I also am not sure how much adjustablity you have.. so it may be all a waste. If the price is the same for a 440-T4, as a 4T60-E, grab the E'*.. may as well play with it a little.

The vacuum modulator just comes off.. you've rebuilt your tranny, it'* not that hard . What rod are you talking about, though? There is the part that sticks in the transmission, with a little button [that does the modulating].. That'* perfectly normal.. and if it'* falling apart like that, then chances are it should have been replaced 5 years ago.

Thanks i'll check it out for a '93 ^ modulator. You'll love the lucas, it works extremely well, and it'* worth the 12 bucks a bottle. Also check out the oil treatment, you won't BELIEVE that stuff. It'll quiet valvetrain noise like u wouldn't believe. I swear by this stuff. Good luck.

But DexIII has more lubricants in it, thus making it slip more, isn't this true? B&M has a DexII formula.. So I think it still exists.. but don't quote me on that.

So then it'* just synthetic you want to stay away from? I guess I learn something new everyday. So the high mileage Valvoline stuff I have, will be fine for my car? So I don't have to throw it away?
