Default power window only goes down

On my 1990 LE, I had my window all the way down and when I tried to roll it up, it went about a third of the way up and stopped. The window motors are slow anyway, and will usually resume their upward travel if I bump them down a bit first. This time it didn't. In the course of trying to grasp the window with one hand and push the up button with the other, it would not move up at all. The motor would move it down just fine. When I push the button to move it up, there is no sound at all. Now that the window is all the way down, if I push the button down, there is a slight hum and click, As if the window still wants to go down. It looks like I will have to somehow get the window up to even begin to fix this, and it feels like I will break something if I try to push it up any harder.
And it has been dry here for a couple of months until I have window problems, now it is starting to rain.
Anyone have any ideas? I have a Chilton'* (POS) manual, but all it says is "Take out the old motor and put in the new one." Not verbatim, but you get the idea.
As usual, any and all help is appreciated.

I already have the door panel off, and I have tried lifting the glass by hand, with no luck. I don't want to break my window while I'm in there. I have already looked inside the door and I realize the need to get the glass out of the way so I can access the mechanism. Does anyone know how to go about that without breaking the glass? Rust is not a problem on my car.

Default window

Try the switch swap first, then procede to the mechanism, Theres a track theat a plastic t nut slides in. Check if its OK. Then check the motor. Its mostlikely tired and needs replacing. look for an external keyway that you can manually turn the motor over with it. Some have them some don't

Could be a connection but "goes up part way and stops" is typical of a period GM power window motor. It has a circuit breaker inside that goes bad but usually if you let it cool off will go up some more.

In any event if you have power for both up and down to the motor then the problem is usually the motor. Problem is that the manual says to begin replacement with the window all the way up.

At the time of the incident, it went up partway and hasn't gone up since. It went down fine and there it remains.
I guess I would have gotten more attention for my problem if I had titled this thread "Can't get it up."

Default CAN'T GET IT UP

Well, there'* a big difference between ED and window-related ED.

Sounds like my drivers' side window. The motor would cut out when lifting the glass.
I replaced the window lift motor, and it works well. Still slower than most cars, but it moves smoothely and upward.

So I guess you could say that it is: "Slow to rise, but it gets the job done."

I don't see any way this can work. The rear window switch has 5 pins and the front switch has 2 pins. The rear switch worked before I removed it, now it doesn't work at all. So far, the cure is worse than the disease. Now I have 3 out of 4 windows not working. What am I missing?

I appreciate your kind words and sympathy.
The point of my last post is that the switches do not interchange
On my car, the rear switch cannot be used for a front switch or vice versa. The switches have all been returned to their correct positions. The back ones don't work now. Thanks a bunch.
My electrical knowledge is not all that limited. I won't claim to be an expert, but I had no problem passing the electronics schools the United States Navy sent me to.
My unfamiliarity with this specific model of car is what has me hung up.
What I was hoping to see is some advice from someone familiar enough with these cars to know about how to get the window up without using the motor and without breaking anything else.
So far, since I followed panda'* advice, I have 2 additional non-working windows. Is there anyone else here that has more knowledge of these cars that might have a solution?
